Eti Bakır Publishes Its First Sustainability Report

12,672 Tons of Carbon Emissions Prevented Through Energy Projects

Eti Bakır, one of the largest industrial enterprises under Cengiz Holding, has published its first sustainability report, evaluating its environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance in line with international reporting standards. The report highlights concrete results achieved in energy efficiency, carbon reduction, water conservation and circular economy. Eti Bakır has made a lasting contribution to nature by planting 2.3 million trees to date, and in 2024 alone, the company prevented 12,672 tons of carbon emissions through its energy projects. Additionally, with efficiency improvements implemented in 2024, the company achieved 3.2 million cubic meters of water savings—marking significant progress in sustainable resource management.

Meeting nearly 20% of Türkiye’s copper, Eti Bakır published its first sustainability report, which holistically evaluates the company’s environmental, social and governance performance. Prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards and considering the requirements of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), the report covers the company’s activities for the 2024 reporting period, sustainability strategy, climate risk management and social contribution projects. Eti Bakır General Manager Asım Akbaş emphasized that the company’s sustainability approach is not merely a compliance process but a long-term value-creation strategy, stating:

“We are accelerating our investments to reduce our carbon footprint, strengthen our energy performance, increase water efficiency and effectively manage climate risks. Our primary goal on this journey is to reduce our environmental impact while creating long-term value for society and the economy. Guided by our strategic roadmap toward our 2030 goals, we are taking concrete steps in renewable energy use, circular economy practices and sustainable product development. At Eti Bakır, we aim to turn sustainable mining into a long-term value chain for future generations.”

EFFICIENCY IN ENERGY, REDUCTIONS IN CARBON

In 2024, energy efficiency projects implemented across Eti Bakır’s facilities prevented 12,672 tons of carbon emissions. During the same period, the company reduced its Scope 1 emissions by 11% and, for the first time, publicly disclosed its Scope 3 emissions—underscoring the importance of a holistic climate strategy.

Thanks to the waste-heat recovery system installed at the Küre facility, heat generated during production was converted back into energy, reducing carbon emissions. At the Murgul facility, the on-site hydroelectric power plant (HPP) with an installed capacity of 20 MW generated 66,368,377 kWh of electricity in 2024, enabling a significant portion of the plant’s energy needs to be met from renewable sources. At the Mazıdağı facility, steam generated during the conversion of sulfur in pyrite into sulfuric acid was utilized for energy production, meeting 70% of the facility’s energy demand.

Through these systems, Eti Bakır increased energy efficiency in its production processes while diversifying its investments to reduce its carbon footprint. The company also strengthened real-time energy monitoring infrastructure across all facilities, enabling data-driven planning for performance improvement projects.

PRIORITIZING CONSERVATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

The report reveals that system improvements implemented in 2024 resulted in 3.2 million cubic meters of water savings. Rainwater harvesting systems and recirculation lines activated in the Küre, Murgul and Mazıdağı facilities enabled the reuse of a significant portion of water utilized in production processes. As a result of these projects, 28% of process water at the Mazıdağı facility became reusable, and the “green water footprint” was calculated and publicly disclosed. In its approach to water management, Eti Bakır prioritizes not only conservation but also increased reuse, aiming to reduce pressure on natural resources. With this holistic approach, Eti Bakır’s Mazıdağı Metal Recovery and Integrated Fertilizer Facilities received the “Sustainable Mining Award” from the Foundation for the Development of Domestic Mining. The company continues to set an exemplary model in the sector through its efforts in environmental management, energy efficiency, occupational health and safety, and social responsibility.

6,767 EMPLOYEES, SOCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE

With eight operations across Türkiye and 6,767 employees, Eti Bakır makes significant contributions to the national economy and employment. In 2024, the company increased its female employment rate by 25%, taking an important step toward gender balance in mining through inclusive human resources practices. Over 1,800 hours of training were conducted across all facilities under Ethics and Compliance Policies, and the Ethics Support Line was launched. Additionally, the company provided a total of 99,427 hours of occupational health and safety (OHS) training to 5,285 employees—strengthening its operational safety culture. In the field of social responsibility, 4,448 students received environmental awareness training under the “Environmental Inspectors Project.” Believing that sustainable development must progress hand in hand with sustainable production, Eti Bakır continues to prioritize local employment, education and awareness projects.

2.3 MILLION TREES PLANTED

Through afforestation activities carried out across its eight facilities nationwide, Eti Bakır has planted 2.3 million trees to date. More than 1.4 million of these trees were planted in the Siirt and Küre operations alone, making a lasting contribution to nature.
